Our Methods

Many of the methods used at Stillwater have long histories because they continue to work.

We make our traditional soap through the hot-process method, allowing oils and lye to complete their transformation through a combination of heat, time, and careful attention. This creates a sturdy, practical bar with the honest character of handmade soap.

Balms are prepared by slowly melting and combining fats, oils, and beeswax until they reach the right balance of firmness, spread, and absorption. Bath salts, milk baths, and scrubs are blended in small quantities so ingredients remain evenly distributed. Candles are poured by hand into amber glass and given time to cool and settle properly before use.

Tradition for Today

These methods are not chosen simply because they are old. They are chosen because they give us greater control over the products we make and keep us closely involved in each stage of production.

We also recognize that tradition should never prevent improvement. We use accurate measurements, documented formulas, careful sanitation, appropriate labeling, and modern safety guidance alongside time-tested techniques.

Our goal is not to romanticize the past. It is to preserve what was useful, improve what can be improved, and continue making familiar goods with care.
