About Stillwater

Our Story

Stillwater Apothecary began with a simple idea: the things we use every day should be useful, beautiful, and made with care.

Inspired by the waterways, old towns, working landscapes, and changing seasons of Northeast Ohio, we create small-batch goods for bathing, grooming, rest, and home. Our collection draws from the practical traditions of the past—when soaps, balms, candles, and household preparations were made close to home from familiar ingredients and expected to earn their place through daily use.

We do not seek to recreate another era exactly. Instead, we carry its most enduring lessons forward: make things honestly, choose materials with purpose, avoid unnecessary complication, and take pride in work that is meant to be used.

From the Water’s Edge

Made for quieter rituals.

Stillwater lives at the meeting point of nature and industry, heritage and renewal, quiet beauty and practical need. It is shaped by the places where rivers pass old mills, wild plants return to weathered ground, and a great blue heron may stand perfectly still beside the remnants of a working canal.

These landscapes remind us that stillness is not emptiness. It is attention. It is steadiness. It is the moment in which we return to what matters.

That spirit guides everything we make.

Where Stillwater begins

The name Stillwater speaks to more than a landscape. It reflects a way of moving through the day.

Still water creates a pause. It offers a moment to notice the air, the weather, the changing season, and the small rituals that are easy to overlook. Washing your hands. Preparing a bath. Lighting a candle before dinner. Applying balm after working outdoors. Folding clean towels. Opening a window and refreshing a room.

None of these moments need to be elaborate to matter.

Stillwater was created around the belief that ordinary routines can feel more considered when the products involved are useful, thoughtfully made, and connected to a larger story.

Our Values

Rooted in household craft

Many of the materials at the center of Stillwater would have been familiar to earlier generations of soapmakers, householders, and craftspeople.

Tallow, olive oil, coconut oil, beeswax, mineral salts, oats, milk, herbs, woods, and aromatic resins have long been used to make practical goods for washing, grooming, bathing, and caring for the home.

We are not interested in recreating the past exactly as it was. We are interested in learning from what it did well: using materials purposefully, wasting less, making in manageable batches, and understanding how each ingredient contributes to the finished product.

Our tallow soap recalls early American soapmaking traditions. Our balms draw from the simple structure of old salves and protective preparations. Our mineral soaks and milk baths reflect the long history of household bathing rituals. Our candles and aromatic blends bring those same material traditions into the atmosphere of the home.

Our Ingredients

Small batches. Deliberate methods.

Stillwater products are developed around the relationship between material, method, and use.

We make in small batches so formulas can be measured carefully, finished consistently, and improved as the collection develops. Different product categories require different processes, but the standard remains the same: understand what each material contributes and give the finished product the time and attention it needs.

Our Methods
A River & Rust Brand

Distinct by design. Connected by place.

Stillwater Apothecary is part of River & Rust, a Northeast Ohio brand house shaped by the landscapes, working history, and traditions of the Rust Belt and Great Lakes region.

Each brand has its own purpose and point of view, while sharing a respect for thoughtful design, useful goods, enduring ideas, and the places and stories that give them meaning.

The river connects us. The rust reminds us.
